Day 5 - Part I

On the last day we had separate programs for the morning. I went to the Hudson river to visit a retired aircraft carrier. When I got there, I found out that this week was Fleet Week. Oops. Glad I got up early (at least by my standards, but also by local standards, apparantly) as there was more police around than paying customers. I won't mention the miles and miles of barriers.

An old aircraft carrier had been converted to museum. Apart from the things you might expect on board a carrier there were quite a few things you wouldn't.

There was suppossed to be a demonstration of paratroopers landing on the flight deck, but the weather conditions were too bad for that, so it was cancelled.

A large part of the flight deck held exhibits of all kinds of flying machines. My interest immediately went to the SR-71 Blackbird. Like I said, there were some things you wouldn't expect on a carrier...

When I was certain the paratrooper demo was off, it was time to have a look inside the superstructure, starting off with PriFly.

Next to the carrier were two other ships.

Scenery on the way to the piece the resistance of fleet week: the nuclear aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy.

By this time, the rest of New York had woken up, queues were getting long, and time was getting short. I was supposed to meet my friend back at the hotel to check out, store our luggage, and have a quick visit to the top of the Empire State Building.
