Easter 2002 was my first trip to the Ring as a certified
Ringer. It seemed like a good idea to stake out the place first
before taking my car out, so the mission was to observe the action and
take lots of
photographs.
Most of the spectating was done at Brünnchen 1 and 2, Wippermann and
Pflanzgarten. My first official Ring trip happened to coincide with
Ben's new car's first trip to the Ring. He'd asked people to take some
photographs of his car in action, and I was happy to oblige.
Unfortunately I was just a few minutes too late to capture Niek's
rolling entry into Brünnchen 1 on film.
There were many closures during the day, but things were settling down
a bit at the end of the afternoon.
Near the end of the day I went to the parking lot near the entry and
introduced myself to Ben as the guy who had just taken loads of
pictures of his car, hoping that he was Ben (if you catch my drift).
[Note from the future: This was in the days before Ben had a vanity
plate ending in '968' gracing his car.]
I was glad to find out that I
had taken pictures of the right car, and Ben offered me a passenger
lap. Little did I know what I was in for... Of course I knew Ben was
quick, but I hadn't expected him to be this quick in a new car. To cut
a long story short: I loved it and I had to come back for more. Which
I did. :-)
